Raytheon's robot car to get 'Urban' test

"It's going to be a challenge," said Russell Mikesell, the leader of "Team Scorpion" that includes engineers, mechanics and scientists from Waltham-based Raytheon, Burlington's iRobot Corp., the University of Arizona and Tucson-based Preferred Chassis Fabrication Inc.

A year later, a group from Stanford University, with a modified Volkswagen called "Stanley," won a repeat of a similar desert contest. This year, the Pentagon is planning to test vehicles in a mock urban center - complete with intersections and other obstacles associated with towns.

Today, it's getting its first big test at a New Mexico obstacle course usually used by the Pentagon to train troops in fighting in urban settings. Mikecell said team members have thrown obstacles in front of the vehicle to see if it stops, as if a pedestrian were running out in front. "It works," Mikesell said.
